IELTS Speaking Part 1

1. Do you have a small or large family?
2. Do you spend a lot of time with your family?
3. How often do you see relatives like aunties, uncles or cousins?
4. Are your parents and grandparents from the same country as you?
5. What do you and your family like to do together?
6. Do you have a good relationship with everyone in your family?
7. Who are you closest with in your family?
8. Is family life important in your country?

Give an example

You can also extend your answer by saying when you did something and giving a few details.

IELTS Speaking Part 2

Describe a person in your family who you admire.


You should say:

  • what their relationship is to you

  • what they have done in their life

  • what they do now

  • and explain why you admire them

You will have to talk about the topic for one to two minutes. You have one minute to think about what you are going to say. You can make some notes to help you if you wish.

Answer all the points given on the card

You don’t need to spend an equal amount of time on each point, but you should talk about all of the points.

IELTS Speaking Part 3

1. Do you think it is better to grow up with brothers and sisters?
2. Is it good to have a large extended family?
3. What role should grandparents play in bringing up children?
4. How has the size of families changed in your country in the last 20 years?
5. What is more important, family or friends?
6. What do you think about single parent families?

Practise the 2nd conditional

Sometimes you’ll need to imagine a situation and discuss possible results or effects using the 2nd conditional.
