Based on my experience with IELTS students I’d say that 90% of IELTS candidates start the IELTS Speaking Task 2 with a phrase like this:
“I would like to talk about….”
This is fine and it won’t stop you from achieving a high band in speaking, but it also won’t impress the examiner and there are much better ways to start.
If you’d like to immediately impress the examiner and start in the best way possible, try beginning your Speaking Part 2 answer with a more advanced phrase, like one of the phrases below:
1. The first thing/ person/ situation/ town that comes to mind when I think about…
2. Well, I immediately thought of a time…
3. A fantastic place/ town/ country I’ve been to is…
4. One of the most thrilling/ incredible/ frightening things I’ve ever done is…
So for example, if your Speaking Part 2 prompt asks you to describe a beautiful place in your country you could say:
“The first place that comes to mind when I think about a stunning place in my country is Lake Baikal”
If the prompt asks you to describe an exciting experience you could start with:
“One of the most thrilling things I’ve ever done is go skiing in the Alps”
Try one of these opening lines, and you're sure make a good first impression on the examiner.
