Audioscript
Sophie: Hi Tom. This is Sophie - you said to phone if I wanted to get more information about the driving school you recommended. Is now a good time?
Tom: Oh, hi Sophie, sure, now’s good. So, the driving school I would recommend is called Excel. I took lessons with them when I was learning to drive last year. They’re based in Reigate - actually I know the address because they’re right beside my office, they’re at 61 East Road.
Sophie: Ok, thanks. So is there an instructor in particular I should ask for?
Tom: Yes, I had lessons with David Sinfield, who was excellent, so I’d go with him, if possible.
Sophie: Let me make a note of his name. So that's David Sinfield. How is Sinfield spelt?
Tom: (1)Sinfield S-I-N-F-I-E-L-D.
Sophie: Does he have a direct line?
Tom: Yes, I’ve got it here. It’s 075 double 8, 623 double ‘O’ 1. I wouldn’t call him in the morning as he’s usually giving lessons. (2)Usually the best time to catch him is in the afternoon. He’s really friendly and easy-going so don’t hesitate to get in touch.
Sophie: Do you know if he gives lessons on weekends?
Tom: Yes as far as I know he works on both Saturday and Sunday. (3)I think the only day he takes off is Tuesday.
Sophie: And what do the lessons usually involve?
Tom: Well, there’s a lot of practical driving tuition, so you’ll be behind the wheel the majority of the time, but in the beginning you’ll spend some time learning the theory behind driving, so things like the road laws and regulations, (4)and understanding what traffic signs mean.
Sophie: Right, good, that’s important too.
Tom: Oh yes, and (5)Tom will also teach you about driving in difficult conditions, especially in bad weather such as when there’s heavy rain.
Sophie: That all sounds great.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tom: And do you want me to tell you about the booking options and costs?
Sophie: Oh, yes please.
Tom: Well, you can book a 1 hour lesson for £34, but the school offers (6)a package of 10 hours of lessons for £320, so I would go with that if I were you. You’re bound to need at least 10 lessons.
Sophie: Do I have to learn on a manual car?
Tom: No, (7)you can choose to have lessons in a manual or an automatic car. The price is the same. I know because I decided to learn in an automatic. I decided it wasn’t worth getting a manual licence these days. Nearly all cars are automatic anyway.
Sophie: Is there anything else I should know?
Tom: Erm, well, don’t forget that (8)you need to have your provisional driving licence before you can start. Have you got that yet?
Sophie: I’ve applied for it already so I should have it in a few days.
Tom: Great, I’m sure you’ll find the lessons really useful. (9)You’re much less likely to have an accident than if you try to learn with a friend or relative and you’ll learn a lot faster. David is a great instructor too.
Sophie: I agree, I’d much rather take lessons with a professional. (Q10)I’d be bound to get into a fight with my Mum or Dad if they tried to teach me.
Tom: It’s pretty stressful learning with family isn't it! Well, let me know how the lessons go and don't hesitate to give me a call if you have any more questions.
