General Training Writing Task 1

8. Letter to Friend (Informal)

You are writing a letter to a friend describing a new colleague at work and asking for advice on how to get along with him/ her.

In your letter, you should say:

  • describe your colleague

  • explain why it is difficult to get along with him/her

  • and ask for advice on how to build a good relationship

Model Answer:

Dear Chris,

I hope this letter finds you in good health and high spirits. It's been a while since we caught up, and I thought I'd share some news from my end.

I wanted to tell you about my new colleague at work, John. He's quite the character! John is an incredibly outgoing and friendly person. He’s approachable, comes across as very laid back, and has a natural talent for making everyone feel at ease around him. He's always ready with a kind word or a funny anecdote, which is a real breath of fresh air in the office.

However, the problem is we never see eye to eye on anything work related. What’s more, you know how I can be a little reserved, while John is very assertive, so the team always ends up doing what he wants. Frankly, it’s driving me crazy and I was hoping you could share some insights or advice on how to build a better working relationship with him. I value your opinion and think your perspective could be really helpful in this situation.

Looking forward to hearing from you. Let's plan a catch-up soon and perhaps you can meet John in person!

Warm regards,

Leo
