IELTS Writing Task 1 Academic Chart, Diagram or Map

Model Answer:

The line chart illustrates the quantities of four kinds of fruit that were consumed by people each month from 1999 to 2022. Overall, bananas were the most popular fruit over this period, while the monthly consumption of mangos increased most significantly.

In 1999, the monthly weights of bananas and oranges eaten were much greater than the weights of apples and mangos. In fact, at this time the consumption of mangos was almost nonexistent. Until 2005, very little changed in people’s consumption patterns in this Asian country, however, after this year, some large changes occurred. Firstly, in 2006 the consumption of apples suddenly plummeted to zero, only to return to the previous level in the next year. Secondly, the amount of mangos consumed took off, and rose very quickly over the next 5 years, rising from around 0.3 kg to about 1.4 kg.

As the consumption of mangos hit a peak around 2009, consumers were beginning to eat fewer and fewer bananas and over the next 5 years banana consumption dropped from around 1.5 kg to almost 0.5 kg, a drop of two thirds. Interestingly, in 2016 the levels of consumption of oranges, apples and mangos were almost equal at around 0.75 kg per month. Around the same time, the weight of bananas eaten was rocketing and reached an all time high of approximately 2 kg in 2022.
