Model Answer:
The bar chart shows the number of people living in four regions of the world at various times, starting with 2005, and ending with a forecast for 2050. The main trend visible is a growth in population in most regions, with a particularly large increase in Africa.
According to the data given, in 2005 the largest population was found in India, at around 1100 million inhabitants. The next most populated region was Africa, at approximately 900 million. The numbers of people living in Europe and the United States were in both cases less than half that of India at around 250 million and 450 million respectively.
By 2020, the populations of Europe, Africa and India had increased significantly, while the population in the United States had remained quite stable. At this time Africa’s populace amounted to around 1400 million people and was almost equal to India’s.
The forecasts for 2035 and 2050 show a continuing fast growth of population in Africa, while the rise in population of India slows significantly. By 2050 Africa is predicted to be the home to around 2.5 billion people, while India is expected to have around 1.6 billion. Europe on the other hand is forecast to see a drop in population between 2035 and 2050 and will have 700 million people in 2050.
