IELTS Writing Task 1 Academic Chart, Diagram or Map

Model Answer:

The line chart provides information regarding the increases and decreases in the gross domestic product of three countries from 1991 to 2021. Overall, we can see that there was growth in GDP in all three places, although one country, China, clearly experienced much faster GDP growth over this period.

In 1991 all the countries had a similarly low level of GDP at around 100 to 200 million USD. GDP remained at this low level for the first 3 years, until 1994, where GDP growth picked up, particularly in China. GDP then increased slowly in all the countries for the next several years. Around 1998, GDP growth in the three countries began to diverge, as Chinese GDP continued to increase while growth slowed in the other two. By 2001 GDP in China had reached approximately 1500 million USD while Brazilian GDP was at roughly 250 million USD.

From 2005 to 2014 GDP in Brazil and India fluctuated, while Chinese GDP continued to rise. By 2014 China’s GDP was roughly 11000 million, which was approximately a fivefold increase over 10 years. Between 2014 and 2021 China and India experienced growth in their GDP's with India reaching around 3200 million USD.  However, Brazil’s economy shrunk during this time and GDP fell from 2500 million USD to 1800 million USD.
