IELTS Writing Task 1 Academic Chart, Diagram or Map

Model Answer:

The two pie charts demonstrate the proportion of time spent accessing the internet using different types of device in the UK. Overall, they show that device usage changed significantly and that people used smartphones to access the internet far more often in 2020.

The first pie chart shows how people got onto the internet in 2015. The majority of internet usage occurred via smartphones and laptops, at 40% and 34% of the time respectively. Obviously, the amount of time spent accessing the internet through these two device types was quite similar in 2015. In contrast, we can see in the second chart that laptops were only employed to access the internet 16% of the time in 2020. Meanwhile, smartphones were a much more commonly used technology, with UK citizens choosing to spend 60% of their internet time on this type of device.

The third most popular way to access the internet in 2015 was via desktop computers. This had also changed by 2020, with tablets becoming more widely used, at 12% of the time, while desktop computers fell back to fourth position, and were used only 8% of the time. However, the use of other devices or smart TVs to access the internet did not change significantly between 2015 and 2020. In both years less than 5% of time spent on the internet happened on these device types.
