Model Answer:
The table provides data on the quantities of coal mined in four countries during three separate years. In general, there is an upwards trend in coal production after 2007, with all but one country increasing production.
Coal mining increased substantially between 2007 and 2014 in China, India and Australia while only dropping slightly in the United States. The jump in production in China stands out, with an increase of approximately 1300 million tonnes in 2014 as compared to 2007. In India and Australia there were similar increases during this period in percentage terms. Both countries mined approximately 50% more coal in 2014 than in 2007.
By the end of 2020 coal production had fallen significantly in the United States, dropping from 906.9 million tonnes in 2014 to 484.7 million tonnes in 2020. In 2020 in Australia coal mining continued at almost the same pace as in 2014, while in China and India, the amount of coal mined continued to increase, although only slightly more was produced than in 2014.
