Model Answer:
The diagram highlights the way in which water moves through the water cycle as the result of various processes. Overall, we can see that the water cycle begins with water falling as rain from clouds, and ends with water reforming new clouds.
The first stage of the water cycle occurs when rain falls from clouds. This often happens when clouds are pushed above mountainous areas. The water falls to the ground and then flows to lower ground as surface runoff. Once at ground level, the water is able to enter the land to become groundwater. It may also end up in lakes, rivers or streams and could eventually flow into seas and oceans.
As a result of being heated, the water evaporates from these lakes and oceans, and begins to form new clouds. Plants and trees also contribute to the production of clouds through the process of transpiration by which they release water into the environment. All this water condenses and forms clouds, which will eventually release the water again as rain, so that the cycle begins anew.
